ROOF CAPTURE TO CISTERNS – SYSTEM 1 OF 6

The first of the six systems is designed to capture water from part of the roof area for temporary storage in above-ground tanks behind the garage area.  The intent is to utilize the water for irrigation of the small lawn area behind the house.  An additional use is stormwater detention, where rainwater would slowly trickle out of a dedicated storage tank into the storm drainage ditch along the front of the property.  This reduces the impact of rainwater during heavy storms, and eliminates the strong flow surge in the storm drainage system.App C - Stormwater Management_4_4_4

The two tanks on the left are storage for irrigation.  The tank on the right fills with the overflow from the first two tanks, and then drains slowly through a controlled-outlet orifice.  The rate of controlled drainage and the amount of storage are dictated by the municipality’s regulations on stormwater management.
